Technology is both a profanity and a blessing. On paper, technology offers us many conveniences and gives us the ability to do previously not possible things.

In reality, however, this comes at a cost.

The price is that technology is incredibly addictive and a distraction in most people’s lives. In other words, technology has made us lazy and unproductive because of its added conveniences, preventing us from reaching our full potential.

How Technology Contributes To Productivity In A Work Environment

First, let’s address the common counter-argument that instead claims that technology allows us to be more productive, especially in a work environment.

According to a Sangoma article, “Productive workers need instant access to business information, data, and equipment; Mobile-friendly technologies are sure to do this.

It’s a legitimate example of the many things that technology enables us to do more efficiently. Having all the relevant information you need at your fingertips could speed up an employee’s workflow and make your job easier overall.

Murray Newlands wrote a similar Forbes article, stating that technology is “allowing mobile workers to do whatever they need to do without being chained to a desk.” Again, technology allows us to perform certain tasks more efficiently, saving time and money. It also makes work easier and solves most of the inconveniences that people had to put up with a few decades ago.

The Downside Of Additional Productivity

However, the problem with this is that employees have to do the work in the first place for everything to be relevant.

“Constant notifications, multiple web pages open on the desktop, and email circulating hourly—these are just a few of the many distractions caused by technology,” says an article on factsuite.com.

It is a valid point, as it’s not hard to see that it’s now common for students to try to get their schoolwork done only to be distracted by social media minutes later. Some people may never break this habit and face the same problem with their work, making employees less productive despite all the added benefits of technology.

Yes, It Can Make Us Lazy.

Technology can reduce our productivity, but it also has the potential to make us lazy and disappointing.

In one of her articles, Dominique Jackson said: “Thanks to [addictive products like the Wii], you can go bowling, play tennis, or attend the Olympics in your living room.” Yes, pretending to be one of the greatest athletes of all time with a Wii controller in hand is fun, but it’s not the most productive thing in the world.

Worse still, after activities like these we feel incline to take another break because we always feel unmotivate or may be fill with a false sense of accomplishment.

Jackson also stated, “Soon the Boy Scouts will be teaching boys to use a GPS instead of navigating with a compass.” Even members of the next generation, who are on the more adventurous side, begin to embrace and rely on technology. It also shows that some educational programs are also beginning to adapt, and some, like the Boy Scouts, don’t even teach children a different way of doing things.

Another post shared that the author and “[his] group of friends. Came up with the idea that one day we could wake up in the morning and head to our smart kitchens with a robot-brewed breakfast.” ” friendly… As good as that sounds, [he] couldn’t think of anything lazier.

This quote perfectly sums up the potential laziness that we could become as technology offers us various conveniences. There aren’t too many aspects of life that technology can’t help us with. Which means there’s virtually no limit to our laziness.

Prioritize Technology Over Other Aspects Of Life.

There is no denying that almost everyone interacts with technology before completing everything that needs  for the day.

Thomas Frank, a YouTuber with more than 2 million subscribers, wrote in one post. “We know we’re studying or writing an article or coding or whatever, but instead we visit Reddit.”

The distraction may not always be Reddit, But the fact is that people are often distract by technology. Even when they’re fully aware of things that need to done. This can lead to less sleep or free time. But it can also affect the quality in which you do other things. Because you are likely to quickly return to the Internet.

Thomas also wrote that, ironically, people “…waste their time reading productivity articles” when this is a virtual guarantee that they won’t use anything they read in those articles. People are unlikely to implement anything related to productivity. But the fact that they don’t suggests that most of us lack the motivation to make these changes.

Finally, There Is The Problem That Technology Is Increasingly Above Our Health.

One study showed that “…digital eye strain halves our blink rate, meaning the tears that protect our eyes evaporate without being replaced.” The sad truth is that very few persons take the time to fix this problem. Although most probably know it. This shows how bad technology addiction is, because not only does it make most people lazy or unproductive. But some people even prioritize it over their health and well-being.

Technology Is A Double-Edged Sword

All in all, technology has undoubtedly become a huge part of everyone’s life and our society. While it offers many advantages. It does have disadvantages such as B. Ruining our productivity, making us incredibly lazy at times. And possibly even threatening our long-term health.

Yes, every bit of technology is design to as addictive as possible. But the choice of whether technology controls our lives is entirely up to us. While technology will likely never be less of a distraction than it is today. We are more than capable of minimizing the risk of technology hurting our lives.
